best of the week

Another week has flown by, and the internet revealed tons of WINS happening in the world. Ever had one of those weeks where it felt like everything you read online was just full of bad news, downers and struggle. Well, not this week! Here's our roundup of the happiest moments on the internet, because sharing is caring, and these posts made us smile!

1. Elena of Avalor, Disney's first Latina princess

disneys latina princess

What! Disney just dropped the mic! I love seeing Disney catch up with the rest of us and show more diversity in their characters, so I was thrilled when the news broke that they're debuting their first Latina princess! You'll be able to catch her on an episode of "Sofia the First" which airs on Disney Junior, but she'll soon have her very own spin-off (YAY!), "Elena of Avalor." Even better, they're describing Elena as a  "confident and compassionate teenager, which sounds like she'll be a great inspiration for young kids everywhere.  Real talk: I've been a fan of Disney since diapers (you'll still catch me singing The Little Mermaid songs, #NotAshamed) but I'm loving the independence and depth Disney has been giving their princesses lately, and this might be a pretty awesome departure from those love-struck (or love-consumed) Disney princesses of the past. Can't wait to meet ya, Elena! // Source

2. An accurate timekeeper, finally!

what time is it? late time!

With Valentine's day just around the corner, gift lists are starting to pop up like crazy. I personally appreciate a gift that's a little wacky, so when Buzzfeed shared their list of creative Vday gifts I knew this was something I had to share with you all. My fav gift on their list is this watch that helps the perpetually late (raising my hand!) be realistic with what time it actually is. Sure, this won't really help me be more punctual, but if I'm being real with myself (4 outfit changes later) this watch looks like it keeps Late People Time pretty accurately. It's a great gift to give to yourself, or someone you dig -- despite them always texting "be right there" when you know they haven't even left the house yet. #GUILTY. // Source

3. Bob's Burgers, now with IRL recipes :D

bobs burgers

Where my Bob's Burgers fans at!? I love this show and even binge watch past seasons on Netflix every chance I get. So basically, every weekend (#NetflixIsMyLife). If you're anything like me, you love catching the little jokes on the Burger of the Day board. BUT THINGS JUST GOT EVEN BETTER! Some glorious person out there in internet-land has been creating real recipes based on those daily burgers, for the rest of us to enjoy in our non-cartoon world. Go check it out already, because seriously, we all need to make the "Baby You Can Chive my Car" burger, right.this.moment! :) // Source

4. Who ya gonna call - GHOSTBUSTERS!

ghostbusters remake

Now I'll be honest, I'm not usually a fan of re-makes (said the whole internet) - but when it comes to the all female casting of Ghostbusters 3, I AM SO THERE! Looks like the leading characters will be played by Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon! Don't get me wrong, I loved the original Ghostbusters and all it's silly goodness, but I also love each of the women that will be in the new version, these ladies have some serious comedic skills.  I know change is hard, but I'm hopeful the spirit of the originals will hold strong - with humor, fun, and hopefully some really cool special effects that they just couldn't pull off with the technology that was available when the originals were made. Look, Dan Aykroyd gave his blessing and that's enough for me to at least give it a chance. But how do you feel, do you plan to give it a watch? // Source

5. Plus size model, Tess Holiday, lands contract

tess holiday

Talk about girl power! Tess Holiday has landed a major modeling contract and that's an amazing win for plus size models everywhere! This lovely dame is rocking a size 22, and at only 5'5" she's taking the modeling industry by storm. Holiday is not only beautiful, she has an incredible message to share that's full of empowerment, self love, and body confidence. She launched an amazing social media campaign back in 2013: #EffYourBeautyStandards, which encourages women everywhere to love the body they're in -- and I'm totally feeling that vibe! // Source

6. 9 lives, FTW (and other cat musings)

bart the cat

Meet Bart the cat. His owner found him laying in the street after being hit by a car. Bart was stiff, cold and apparently dead - a moment all cat lovers fear. His owner was so upset, he asked a neighbor to bury the cat nearby in a shallow grave, so you can imagine the surprise when Bart showed  back up at home just a few days later, having dug his way out of the grave, badly injured but totally alive! Some are calling it a miracle, others are getting that Pet Semetary vibe (side note: this movie is a must watch if you've never seen it!). The local Humane Society worked their magic, and good ol' Bart will be better in no time! So, no matter your thoughts on his unexpected recovery, this is totally the internets feel good moment of the week! // Source

That's it for now! Oh, and for my Super Bowl lovin' Vinties  - here's a few cute last minute recipes you can pull off just in time for game day.

We'll see you next week.

xoxo

When most people think of barbeque, they’re thinking pulled porked – but I’m talking the better version of barbeque: sloppy joes.

We all know we can just grab a can of manwich and well basically you’re done, but why do that when all you need is an extra five minutes to make your own sauce, and have the flavoring to your liking?

Here is what you’re going to need:

  • 1 bag of beef crumbles (Beyond Beef is my go to) or 1 lb of ground beef
  • 1 cup of ketchup
  • 1/4 cup of mustard
  • 8 oz of brown sugar
  • Pinch of pepper

Beyond Beef is my go to, and here's why...

They take the proteins right out of the plants, along with the fat and minerals. It has the same texture and taste as beef, whereas other crumbles will not taste the same! It also lacks antibiotics, cholesterol, and saturated fat!

The nutritional value is great too! There is 13 grams of protein per serving and only 100 calories.

To start:

Spray a large cooking pan with an oil spray, if you are using beef you do not need to do this. Place your crumbles (or ground beef) in the pan and let cook.

While this is cooking, I start my sauce in a bowl. Any size will really work, I just used a regular one.

In your bowl, put one cup of ketchup, 1/4 cup of mustard, and 4 oz (a quarter of a 16 oz bag) of brown sugar in. Mix very well. Your concoction should get thick. You can add more brown sugar if you wish it to be sweeter, I’m a fan of about 8 oz of it.

Put a pinch of pepper in your pan, and mix up your crumbles/beef. When this is about 75% cooked, pour in your sauce. Mix it in well. This is going to thicken everything up – a lot.

After you have added your sauce, your creation will be done within a few minutes, finish cooking until your sauce is nice and warm.

Eat as is, or put it on a delicious potato roll.

Added bonus: Add Daiya cheese on it for extra flavor (or a simple piece of American cheese).

If you try this recipe out, let me know so I know how you liked it! You can do this with chick’n strips as well!

One of my new year’s resolutions this year is saving money, especially on clothes. A great way to keep my resolution is by giving a new life to clothes I’ve forgotten about.

While going through my closet, I found this Charlotte Russe crop top that I used to be obsessed with! But because I’m currently a victim of that Chicago winter, I shoved it to the back of my closet…until now!

After a few a trials and errors, I finally figured out how to incorporate this crop top into my winter wardrobe, thus giving it a new life! First, I decided to wear the crop top with high-waisted leggings from Forever 21.

To make the outfit winter friendly, I threw on this amazingly warm knitted cardigan from H&M.

Finally, to accessorize, I have on a  this adorable owl bag also from H&M and some Style&Co. booties.

Voila!

Take the Vinted Detox challenge with me, and breathe new life into something you already own!

Hi Vinties!  My name is Cat and I’m here to talk to you about vintage.

In theory vintage clothing is awesome. It’s unique, well-made, eco-friendly, and gives you near automatic fashion- cred. Not to mention the  endless supply of blog-people running around in top-to-toe vintage looks shooting laser beams of fabulous from their cat’s eye glasses.

But for those of us who aren’t ready to jump into a full housecoat and victory roll ensemble, I want to show you how to get started with some pieces that are easy to find and easy to wear. No costumes. No intimidation.

I'm going to start with a staple that can be both bohemian and work appropriate, twee or polished, and even unisex: the sleeveless button-up blouse.

Perks of adding this vintage item to your wardrobe:

Better patterns and materials. Modern versions of these shirts are not uncommon; Oversized sheer versions have been particularly stylish lately. But by shopping vintage, you can find great patterns that might not be sold in stores today. Like this vintage strawberry print.

When shopping vintage, you're also more likely to find better quality materials like 100% cotton as well as sewing details like darts, pressed collars, stronger seams, ect.

Flattering. On anyone. Period. Wide shoulders, round bellies, hourglass waists, large boobs, flat chests,  collar bones, and toned arms are just some of the body parts that look good in this style of shirt.

Easy to find and cheap. A lot of these shirts were produced in a wide range of eras. That means this is an easy to find and inexpensive piece of vintage clothing, perfect for the beginner collector. You don’t need to dedicate your life to becoming an ebay bounty hunter to track one down. Here, here, here, and here are several examples available right now on Vinted, both new and old. Or you can support your local vintage shop, goodwill, or mom’s closet.

Tips for wearing:

Pair with anything high-waisted. There are no limits. The combined power of a button-up and a high waist will make you look supremely put together. Be careful; High power business deals and wealthy lovers might start flying at you while you walk through the grocery store.

Modern color schemes. Vintage patterns can look super kitchy. And if that’s your aesthetic, go forth and do itttttt! But for people with a more modern style, color combinations like mixed neutrals can make you look sleeker. This little kangaroo number is one of my favorites because it reminds me of an Escher Pattern.

Other favorites of mine are all black with a blue and white patterned shirt or a burgundy, white, and blue combo for a sophisticated Americana look.

  • Layer over a maxi dress. Then unbutton the bottom few buttons and tie it up like you’re a camp counselor named Ginger.
  • For a more laid-back look, find an oversized shirt and wear over very skinny pants. Unbutton a few buttons at the top and you’re set to go. Add layers of rings and necklaces to make this very bohemian.
  • Wear one to work with black pants or a solid pencil skirt. Maybe add some pearls if you’re feeling extra retro. Channel Natasha in Iron Man 2 when she boxes Tony Stark to the ground. Stop at nothing.
  • Wear under cardigans to combat the cold. Add quirky pins. Seduce everyone in your local bookstore.

That's all I've got friends!

Below you should post me your sleeveless button-up OOTD or any suggestions you have for vintage pieces I should cover in future blog posts. --Cat

Dat week tho

Annnnnnd we're back! Let's all talk about the new influx of #foodporn and #workoutselfie in our IG's! Just me? (More like only me doing it) It's January - the time of "I gotta get my life together for this year" and we see people on that resolution grind! But mistakes happen - and we slip - the point is to keep going! So, to help you (and myself) get inspired I bring to you some articles I have bookmarked for constant realness!

1.Don't over work out

Runners life!

Chalkboard mag is my essential site for all things health! One of my essentials, at least. And this article is a great reminder that you need to listen to your body! I know how it is - you go to the gym and there is that one person who is fit doing pull ups like its as easy as eating a chip! But who cares? You're there - listen to your body! My personal battle is always missing a day or two and trying to make it all up in one day. But no more! If I want to be a lean, mean, fighting machine I have to do it right! //source

2. Mercury Retrograde???

Growing up, if something went wrong - my mom would say "Well Mercury is in retrograde!" So now, I'm always very aware of that retched retrograde time of the year (3 -4 times of the year!) But this list is an inspirational twist! I'll be pulling this out quarterly for that much needed pick me up from my usual sour faced time. Gala Darling has been one of my favorite bloggers for years now, and I've been pining over her birthday girl shoe as well - which i think is now unavailable (pine with me here). But I digress, here is a great list of things to do for a little pick me up or to let go of something. //source

3. Keep that brain power!

What does the rest of this photo look like???

I used to be really good about keeping up with reading books and working on new skills - but as of late I've let all personal develoment fall to the backburner. Well not anymore! 2015 is back to being a rennaissance woman! With that, this blog really helps me out - tricks on how to keep up and even links to check out some sites! I also have been trying to play brain game apps on my phone at least 3 times a week - I have Elevate and Peak, check them out if you're interested! //source

4. Juice!

Juice makes me happy

Let me get this out first - I used to watch the Bad Girls Club on oxygen network and season 1 there was a whole juice debacle - so when we're all talking cold press I'm thinking of this. Anyway, juice has been a serious health trend as of late and I'll be honest - I'm into it. And now, they are adding charcoal into the mix! Go on with your bad selves juice gods! I've been on that charcoal game for some time - local shops have had charcoal masks for years and I'm all about my charcoal body sponge but never did I think drinking charcoal would be in my life. Here I am - reading on it and thinking "but maybe I need it???" Let me know your thoughts on this! Or maybe.... I'll tell you how it worked! ***disclaimer! I'm not condoning juice cleanses - but a good juice a day with a serving of fruits and veggies is my thang***  //source

Alrighty, that is all I got for now! Gonna go pregame with some charcoal juice and then workout moderately well.

I love shopping in Goodwill or other thrift spots right after Christmas and New Years because I always seem to find something gently used that I'm able make new!  But you don't want to find yourself with more clothes than you can handle, so here are my tips for Vinting out the closet!

Shop after Christmas & New Years

That's right now! This is the time of year when you go through your closet to see if you can get rid of your old, and find it a new home so someone else can make it new again! What's old to you may not always be old to someone else. ;)

On my blog  Seasoned Shoes, I talk about going through my closet and donating my shoes or handbags to Goodwill. This is a great tax write off for the following year, but instead of getting the money back later, sometimes I prefer to get the money back now - which is why I like Vinted. Plus, it allows me to swap (one in, one out), which is a cool feature.

One in, One Out

Hit the mall after Christmas and New Years looking for those after holiday deals - CHECK! Now, when you get home, go through your findings and check to see if there's anything in your closet that works with your latest purchases.

One thing will lead to another, and you'll find some items that you could really do without. Maybe you don't plan to wear them anymore, or as you're putting together outfits, you'll see that they're just no longer your style. My daughter does the same and together we post all of the items we're getting rid of on Vinted.

One in, one out - this method helps you cut the clutter while updating your style!

diy love

As many of you may already know, I am huge into crafting and DIY-ing. Literally all of my free time is spent into making something! I have noticed a lot of Vinties showing interest in crafting and DIY-ing. So I am here to offer some times and tricks for beginners and even experience crafters and DIY-ers!

Supplies:

The number one concern most people have with crafting is supplies! Where to get the supplies, how much it will cost, quality and quantity. These are all concerns that people have!

Paying full price? Never!

  • Sales!

Check your Sunday paper for sales for your local craft stores! If you do not get a Sunday paper, you can check on the store website! My favorite craft stores are AC Moore and Michaels. They always have great sales and they are different every week!

My personal favorite sale that my craft store has is their $1 clay sale. This is a sale that they normally have just once a year. It is a great deal so I literally stalk their sales papers waiting for this sale! I stock up on all the clay I plan on needing and even some extra! You can never have too much of your favorite item for a great deal!

  • Coupons!

The craft stores that I use always offer coupons in their ad in the Sunday paper! There is a coupon each week for a minimum of 40% off of one regular price item. There are sometimes coupons for a percentage off your entire purchase! Those are also great deals! They also give coupons when you make a purchase and there are always some online! If you have a smart phone, go to the website and bring up the coupon in the store! The cashier will scan the coupon right from your phone, no printing necessary!

Want to make something but unsure of what to do? Pinterest!

Pinterest has literally everything and anything you can think of! Sign up is super easy. All you need to do is put in your email, make a password and answer a few more simple questions about yourself. Then you can choose some interests that Pinterest will use to make your feed based on those interests!

Once you have your account, you can search for anything! Just type in what crafting material you are interested in working with and it will show tons of ideas that you can do with that material! You can "pin" things to different "boards" that you create yourself to save them so you can easily find them later! When you click on a picture on Pinterest, it will take you to the link where the photo originated! Sometimes you will be taken to a blog that has a tutorial. Sometimes it will go to a site such as Etsy where the specific item is being sold.

Getting ideas from Pinterest is A-Okay but remember to put your own touch to it!

And do not forget to download the Pinterest App!

The ideas are endless in what you can make! The main goal is to have fun and express yourself through your craft! Feel free to share any crafts or DIY projects you do (or would like to do) in the comments! ☺

Hello Vinties!  My name is Kristin, and I blog over at A Slice of Mudpie.  I talk about life with my wild and sweet 5-year-old boy, Harrison.  I am excited to share with you all how I handle New Year's Resolutions...

It’s that time of year, where everyone is shouting from the rooftops about how they are going to reinvent their lives.  That they will stick to their New Year’s resolutions.  That the saying “New Year, New You” is their mantra for the year.

And then a month later, they are back to their old habits.

It happens, change is not easy.  That is why last year; I decided to take my resolutions one month at a time.  Each month, I gave myself a new resolution/goal that I wanted to accomplish.  That way, it was only 4 weeks.  4 weeks is a heck of a lot more manageable then 12 month.  It worked so well in 2014, that I decided to do it again in 2015 with a few slight changes.

Each month, I will have a resolution.  However I will also have re-focus months so that I can get better at implementing lifestyle changes.  That, and 12 resolutions was hard.

I started my New Year by doing my usual tasks: cleaning the closets (I flip all my hangers backwards, as I wear a item, I turn the hanger the right direction.  At the end of the year, any items still with backwards hanging hangers get added to my Vinted closet), breaking out a new planner (that I usually forget about after a month), and writing out my plan for the year (this includes things like ultimate goals, such as land a great paying job).

While I haven’t come up with all of my goals yet, I have mapped out my...

Initial Plans

January:  Budget

See my plans here.

February:  Hallway project.

I have never loved how my hall looks, so I am planning a few DIY projects to update it.

March: Focus month

Make sure I am sticking to my budget, and make needed changes.  Tweak anything in the hall to make sure it looks how I want.

April: Healthy eating

I am hoping to cut out processed food and have a clean-eating month.  I figure by April I can hopefully have the grill back out!

May: Increase work-outs

After all, it’s almost swimsuit season.

June: Focus month

Last June is when I fell off the wagon with my healthy habits.  Summer just had too many indulgences.  This year, I don’t want that to happen again.

I will add goals to future months as they get closer, that way I don’t feel to tied down and can add things as I think of them or need to incorporate them into my life.

What New Year's resolutions have you made for the year?  How do you stick with them?

Detox!

Many are talking about how to jump into the New Year with a new you! Go get that new hairdo or that new wardorbe, but did you ever think about going green with your beauty routine?  Now when you hear going green you probably are thinking recycling or planting trees. But did you know that by mixing up your beauty routine you can create a healthier you and a healithier earth?

Many people do not know, but a lot of the beauty supplies have parabens and toxins that could be harmful for your health.  Often lotions and foundations are absorbed into the skin, lipsticks are eaten, and packaging ends up in a landfill.  So this year learn whats in your beauty products and know what you are putting in your body.  Here are some simple tips and tricks to follow in your beauty routine.  Also, some beauty DIYs to start off the New Year!

5 Tips for a healthier and greener New Year

1. Read the back of the packaging- read the ingredients and do some research (do they test on animals?)

2. Less is more- look at the packaging and go with minimal packaging

3. Recycle- we all know this is a step to going green- recycle lotion bottles and shampoo bottles or reuse them

4. Make your own beauty products- see below for some DIYs

5. When going clothing shopping or getting those beauty products BYOB (bring your own bag) so you wont end up using plastic or paper bags

6. Go thrifting- it is like recycling clothing- a lot of times mainstream clothing stores that sell clothing for cheap are often tied with sweat shops and shakey labor laws

clothes on clothes on clothes!

DIYs

Now I know we all want to splurge on a new dress or that new pair of shoes and going with natural products can get a little pricey, but you can do some at home recipes.

Natural eyeshadow

  • Tiny bit of cocco powder with a drop of coconut oil- simply mix until you get the right constistancy and you have your own brown eyeshadow

Nail polish

  • Now this isn't natural, but a great way to recycle some old eyeshadow that you did not use in 2014. Simply crush up your eyeshadow and add it to clear nail polish and mix for a new color

Lip stain

  • Many of us have seen how to make lipstick out of crayons, however Crayola came out with a disclaimer that it isn't toxic, but to use it at your own risk.  So heres a simple recipe for a natural lip stain. Simply crush berries (blueberries, cranberries, and pomegrante) and mix it with olive oil until you get the constancy you want and put it in a little container.

Lip Scrub

  • 1 TSP of brown sugar , 1 TSP of white sugar, 1 TSP of honey, and 1.5 TSP of olive oil
  • Simply mix them together and put on your lips and massage it in for about 20-30 seconds and wipe off the mixture and you will have soft hydrated lips.

Hair Mask

  • It's cold this time of year and often your hair dries out- so just mix 1 TBS of coconut oil and 2 TSP of honey. Add the mixture to your hair starting at the scalp and working outwards. Wrap your head in a warm towel and let it seep in for about 15- 30 minutes. Then rinse! You will have moisturized hair- do this for about once a week for healthy hair.
