Cornelius a Lapide (1567–1637) was a renowned Flemish Jesuit priest and biblical scholar, best known for his extensive commentaries on nearly every book of the Bible, written in Latin and widely respected for their depth, erudition, and clear Catholic orthodoxy during the Counter-Reformation. His works aimed to defend and elucidate Scripture in line with Church teachings, influencing theological study for centuries. Johannes Meursius (1579–1639), on the other hand, was a distinguished Dutch classical scholar and antiquarian, celebrated for his expertise in ancient Greek and Roman history and literature. A prolific author, Meursius produced critical editions and commentaries on classical texts, as well as treatises on the customs and institutions of ancient civilizations, contributing significantly to the humanist scholarship of the Dutch Golden Age.
